Clean lines, luxe materials, and intentional spaciousness define the work of Shawn Amtower, a celebrated interior designer whose career is built on the foundation of strong, collaborative relationships. Recently featured in LUXE magazine for her stunning Cherry Hill project, Amtower Interior + Design’s portfolio frequently showcases collections from R HUGHES, a showroom she has loyally supported since its inception. Having spent time with Shawn ourselves, we wanted to delve into the distinctive elements of her design process and the partnerships that elevate her work, making her a smart choice for clients seeking comprehensive and sophisticated design solutions for full renovations or new builds.
A Holistic Approach to Design
Shawn’s design philosophy transcends mere aesthetics, embracing a holistic approach that encompasses the entire project envelope. From the inception of a concept to the final touches, Shawn ensures every detail aligns with her visionary standards – seamlessly integrating interior architecture into her projects with trusted partners. This includes the meticulous design of not only the top-of-mind spaces like the kitchens, bedrooms, & bathrooms, but also hallways, foyers, mudrooms, landscape and more – all in an effort to create a cohesive aesthetic that flows effortlessly throughout a project.
Partnership with Builders: The Hammersmith Connection
Central to Shawn’s process is her long standing partnership with Mike Hammersmith, a builder renowned for quality and integrity. This collaboration began over a decade ago when Shawn, then new to the design world, was encouraged by friends and colleagues to pursue her passion.
Shawn’s ability to collaborate effectively with builders like Hammersmith sets her apart in the design world. “Clients appreciate the relationship Hammersmith and I have,” she notes. This synergy allows Shawn to focus on the creative aspects of design while trusting that the construction team understands and executes her vision, often anticipating her preferences. I think it’s important to give credit where it’s due, as it really does take all involved to create an outstanding project. On that note, it was important to me to give Hammersmith props from the beginning – from that very first article in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyle. His integrity is just on a different level.”
Navigating Challenges and Growth
Shawn’s journey has not been without its challenges. Early in her career, a particularly difficult project led her to step back from design for two years. However, the support from her network, including Sarah Atkinson of Grey Furniture and Amy Wikman of Bjork Studio, brought her back stronger. “Right at that time, Hammer put my name in the hat for a prestigious client” and Shawn recalls “I was in shock because I just kept repeating I’m not a designer. I don’t even have a trade account! But he emphasized that he thought I could do it.”
This pattern kept repeating itself.
Sarah Atkinson, who initially created custom furniture and lighting for Shawn’s projects, eventually transitioned to project management at Hammersmith, illustrating the evolution and growth of Shawn’s professional relationships.
A One-Stop-Shop for Clients
What truly distinguishes Shawn Amtower is her ability to provide a comprehensive, all-encompassing service. From initial design concepts to the final, exquisite touches, Shawn oversees every aspect of a project. “I’m usually coming with inspirational photos, and we collaborate in that way,” Shawn explains about her process with Hammersmith. This integrated approach ensures that clients receive a cohesive and impeccably executed design without the need for multiple contractors.
Client-Centric Philosophy
At the heart of Shawn’s approach is a commitment to kindness, honesty, and respect — qualities she seeks in both her clients and professional partners. “What I put out in the world, I aim to have mirrored back, not only in my personal life, but in my professional life as well.”
Clarity in pricing is paramount; Shawn ensures clients understand the costs and benefits associated with their projects. This honesty extends even to her billing practices, where she uses clients’ credit cards for purchases, providing them with the security of transparency and the rewards to boot.
Emphasis on Showroom Partnerships
Another cornerstone of Shawn’s success is her relationship with esteemed showrooms like R HUGHES. “You check off all the boxes for me: respect, honesty, kindness,” Shawn remarks about R HUGHES. “The friendship with Ryan from the very beginning felt right. It just felt natural. I feel blessed that I have clients that understand the pricing of these goods & that we can start here with the foundational pieces.” These partnerships are crucial, providing access to the high-quality, luxurious pieces that underpin her designs. Whether her clients can buy one or 10 of these pieces, doesn’t matter. What matters is starting every project with bench made product that exudes quality by artisans at the top of their craft, which is exactly what R HUGHES provides and is a direct reflection to Shawn’s unwavering commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
Looking Ahead
While Shawn remains focused on her current projects, she is always open to new challenges. “I’m always excited about a big project,” she admits, reflecting her enthusiasm for design and continuous improvement.
Shawn’s career is a testament to the power of strong partnerships and a meaningful approach to design. Her ability to integrate interior architecture with her distinctive aesthetic, coupled with her collaborative spirit, makes Shawn Amtower an invaluable asset to any client seeking a comprehensive and refined design partner.
